On 9 August 2018, Israeli airstrikes destroyed the Al-Meshal Foundation, the cultural centre in Gaza that was one of the few cultural outlets available to Palestinians there; it was bombed to the ground. The bombing of the cultural centre is a brutal attack on the arts, on civilisation and on freedom of speech.
As people who work and are engaged with culture, we condemn Israel’s war on Palestinian culture and call upon the public to sign this petition in protest against this war on art and culture.
The Al-Meshal centre was a symbol of culture, something that reinforced Palestinian identity. Israel targeted it because art is more than just art: it is also a form of resistance.
This is not the only cultural site Israel has targeted. Several other places have been destroyed in the past, and this reflects Israel's intention to target Palestinian culture as a whole.
The day after the attack,10 August, artists in Gaza staged a concert in the rubble of the Al-Meshal Theatre as an act of hope, and as a message to the world that Israeli attacks can shatter buildings and institutions, but will never succeed in silencing the people and the arts.
