INTELECTUALES CON PALABRAS

Hoy se cumplen 60 años del discurso de las Palabras a los Intelectuales que fijó los parámetros de expresión creativa para los cubanos. En 2009, el artista Hamlet Lavastida creó una obra que tituló "Intelectuales sin palabras" como comentario a las condiciones en que los cubanos se han visto obligados a crear durante seis décadas.

Somos artistas e intelectuales que hemos decidido hablar como uno solo. Estas son nuestras palabras.

Condenamos la criminalización por parte del gobierno cubano de Hamlet Lavastida, un ciudadano cubano y artista que no ha hecho nada más que ejercer su derecho constitucional a expresar sus ideas y participar en protestas cívicas no violentas.

Aunque Hamlet es hoy el blanco de la agresión del Estado cubano, entendemos que la criminalización de sus pensamientos, conversaciones privadas y arte constituye un ataque a todos los artistas y ciudadanos de conciencia cubanos.

Exigimos que el gobierno de Cuba lo libere y retire el caso completamente fabricado contra él. Hamlet está recluido en la Unidad de Instrucción de la Seguridad del Estado Villa Marista bajo investigación por supuesta " instigación a delinquir ". Se le acusa de haber “incitando y convocando a la realización de acciones de desobediencia civil en la vía pública, utilizando las redes sociales y la influencia directa sobre otros elementos contrarrevolucionarios”. La supuesta evidencia que se utiliza en su contra proviene de una sugerencia que hizo en un grupo de chat privado para que los billetes cubanos fueran marcados como gesto de arte público. Esa sugerencia nunca fue llevada a cabo por ninguno de los miembros del grupo del chat, ni se hizo pública hasta que el comentarista de la televisión cubana Humberto López presentó la comunicación privada de los ciudadanos cubanos en la televisión nacional.

Nos indigna la violación de la privacidad de los ciudadanos, las acusaciones injustas contra nuestro colega y, fundamentalmente, la idea de que un intercambio de ideas y el ejercicio de la imaginación sean calificados como un delito por el gobierno cubano. Un ciudadano es enjuiciado por ejercer derecho a la ciudadanía. Lo que ellos llaman desobediencia civil (incluida la crítica al gobierno y la organización de campañas) no es objeto de represión en una República democrática”. No podemos tolerar una incursión tan atroz en los derechos humanos.

Nos negamos a callar o a distanciarnos de un compañero perseguido sabiendo que en cualquier momento cualquiera de nosotros podría caer en la misma condición. Hacemos un llamamiento a todos nuestros colegas de las artes y la cultura en todo el mundo para que se unan a Hamlet Lavastida y soliciten al Ministro de Cultura, al Presidente, al Consejo de Ministros y al fiscal que revisa este caso, que retiren inmediatamente todos los cargos contra él.

INTELLECTUALS WITH WORDS

Today is the 60th anniversary of the "Words to Intellectuals" speech that set the parameters for creative expression in Cuba. In 2009, artist Hamlet Lavastida created a work he titled "Intellectuals without words" as a commentary on the conditions in which Cubans have been forced to create for six decades.

We are artists and intellectuals who have decided to unite our voices for one purpose. These are our words.

We condemn the criminalization of Hamlet Lavastida by the Cuban government. He is a Cuban citizen and artist who has done nothing more than exercise his constitutional right to express himself.

Although Hamlet is today a target of aggression by the Cuban state, we understand that the criminalization of his thoughts, private conversations and art constitutes an attack on all Cuban artists and citizens.

We demand that the Cuban government release him and drop the fabricate charge against him. Hamlet is being held at the Villa Marista State Security Instruction Unit under investigation for alleged "instigation to commit a crime". According to the state media outlet Razones de Cuba, "he has been inciting and calling for civil disobedience actions in public, using social networks and direct influence on other counterrevolutionary elements". The alleged evidence used against him comes from a suggestion he made in a private chat group for Cuban banknotes to be marked as a public art gesture. That suggestion was never carried out by any of the members of the chat group, nor was it made public until Cuban television commentator Humberto Lopez revealed this private communication on national television.

We are outraged by the violation of the privacy of citizens, the unjust accusations against our colleague and, fundamentally, the fact that an exchange of ideas and the exercise of imagination are qualified as a crime by the Cuban government, resulting in a citizen being prosecuted for exercising what should be citizens' rights. What the Cuban government calls civil disobedience (a category that includes criticism of the government itself and the organization of civic campaigns) is not subject to repression in a democratic Republic. We cannot tolerate such an egregious incursion into human rights.

We refuse to remain silent or distance ourselves from a persecuted colleague, knowing that at any moment any one of us could find ourselves in the same condition. We call on all our colleagues in the arts and culture to join with Hamlet Lavastida and demand that the Cuban authorities, the President of the Republic, the Council of Ministers and the prosecutor in his case immediately drop all charges against him.

None of us will be free until we are all free together!
