Dear All, Last night was the event. While we were unable to get it canceled or shut down early, there was a formidable protest, and riot police were out in full force in order to defend our right to free speech or something. The real benefit of this petition was the enormous attention it reaped for the protest, and the connections and networking that have been made over the last few months. We are all stronger now in our community self defense thanks to these efforts, and we will only gain strength from here. This was merely one encounter in a longer campaign to resist the rise of fascism in the United States. This will also be my last update. If you'll humor me, I'd like to share a passage from People's historian Howard Zinn, spoken in a 1971 debate with William F. Buckley. Regarding the "mode of revolution," Zinn says, "Traditional guerilla warfare is not going to do in the United States...those modes of operation which are mostly non violent and which are long term which involve organizing people, creating clusters of power wherever we can in the society; operating, yes, as guerillas, but not as military guerillas, as political and cultural guerillas. Were up against enormous centralized power...we're up against police forces that take pictures of everybody at a demonstration in this free and democratic state. The problem therefore is, not to amass your force to take the White House, you're not going to be able to do it...what the revolution means to me in the United States is not a quick seizure of power but long-range organizing activity in which you organize pockets of resistance among people everywhere in the country. Yes, in universities, in communities, in places where people work, to the point where young people can resist going to war, to the point where people in factories can stop working when they think the policies are going against them, where we can stop General Motors from churning our pollution into the air, where we can stop the oil companies, simply by stopping the machinery of government. Now, this may mean resistance, it may mean disorder in the way that strikes and demonstrations and non-violent resistance very often means disorder. But I think it will take a succession of acts like that, long-run, but not as long-run as the slow, endless and impossible process of reform that we've had so far in the United States, and which hasn't changed anything basic in the economy, in the polity, or in the culture." I think Zinn's words are relevant to the political situation we are facing. Thank you everyone who signed the petition and/or who contributed to the opposition effort in any way. You are the revolution. -C P.S. I got word last night that all-American neo-Nazi and professional punching bag Richard Spencer is launching his own university speaking tour for 2017. Keep your eyes peeled.
