CTV NEWS, STOP CENSORING ACTIVISTS TO MANUFACTURE CONSENT.
The Issue
CTV London’s coverage of London’s “Global day of action” protest can be described at best as equivocating, and at worst as disingenuous.
Firstly, there was virtually no context given as to the motivation of these protests. The reason cited in the broadcast was a show of support for ‘what’s being described as a “humanitarian crisis”.’ It is strange that we identified ourselves as supporting Maduro in the Venezuelan Presidential crisis, and that the previous story said Maduro denies the truth of the claims of a humanitarian crisis - and yet, we are described as showing support for a ‘humanitarian crisis’. Our position is precisely the opposite: that this is an engineered and wholly-preventable political, not humanitarian, crisis.
Thus, it comes as totally unexpected that the subtitle of the story should be ‘Attempts to move aid into Venezuela’. Those who follow the Venezuelan situation closely will know that on the 14 February, Venezuela did receive 933 tons of medical supplies, i.e. 25 million euros worth of aid from their allies, Russia and China (https://www.telesurenglish.net/news/Venezuela-Receives-933-Tons-of-Medical-Aid-From-Allies-Abroad-20190214-0025.html) But CTV London is apparently content to misrepresent both the state of affairs in Venezuela and our motives in showing support.
The Russian foreign ministry accurately warns that Western aid is a pretense - something which I stated in speaking with CTV, and which was not picked up for the broadcast. As Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zarakhova, warned: ‘A provocation, including with casualties, is being prepared under the guise of a humanitarian convoy. And it is needed as a pretext for a forceful action from outside.’ (https://www.telesurenglish.net/news/Russia-Warns-That-US-Humanitarian-Aid-Is-A-Blatant-Sham-20190214-0003.html) But the institutionalized Russophobia of our media ensures we could never acknowledge something as obvious as this, which would allow us to overcome our historical amnesia - which conveniently forgets countless illegal ‘interventions’ in Latin America by Western powers. Toothless journalism - here specifically, CTV London - is complicit in fostering these paranoid and anti-democratic narratives.
Thus, to consider briefly the evidence concerning ‘aid’ convoys and border skirmishes: despite the fact that the guarimbero gangs of the opposition lobbed molotov cocktails at national guard forces, these gangs blamed the national guard’s tear gas for starting the fires (see footage posted by @taseenb to Twitter, 23 Feb, 3:02pm); Colombian journalist Humberto Ortiz (@graffitiborrao) posted footage to Twitter (24 Feb, 12:25am) from a pro-opposition source, which appears to show the exact moment an opposition molotov cocktail lands near a truck; teleSUR reporter Madelein Garcia (@madeleintlSUR) posted a photo (23 Feb, 5:01pm) showing an opposition protester next to a truck and open flames, wielding a gas canister; drone footage also posted by her showed the flaming trucks far back on the Colombian side of the Venezuela-Colombia border (23 Feb, 5:03pm); even Bloomberg News (@tictoc) published footage (23 Feb, 5:07pm) of young opposition protesters assembling molotov cocktails; as well, the International Red Cross, specifically Max Blumenthal (@MaxBlumenthal) offered condemnations (23 Feb, 4:18pm) of opposition members disguising themselves as Red Cross workers, amid burning wreckage no less; there is more than enough evidence amassed to identify the standard operating procedure of Western intervention, which conjures false narratives of humanitarian crises, to ultimately justify military action [sources from the foregoing paragraph obtained from: https://www.globalresearch.ca/burning-aid-an-interventionist-deception-on-colombia-venezuela-bridge/5669622 It is this false crisis which we oppose, and we are doubly resentful of being even remotely associated with these antagonistic opposition forces. CTV has decidedly rejected some of the most basic journalistic standards in neglecting all of these easily-available facts, and painting us in an equivocating light, which ultimately favoured the powers that be.
We demand that CTV News stop censoring anti-war activists and manufacturing consent for the imperialist war against Venezuela.
Although CTV News censored us, the Consulate General of Venezuela in Vancouver acknowledging our protests on Twitter.
