Crozier-Williams Renovations Must Address Sustainability

The Issue

The Cro Renovation will be a defining moment in Connecticut College's commitment to sustainability. Either the College will act consistently with its values and promises or will set a harmful precedent for campus development for years to come. The proposed Cro plan only contains basic environmental upgrades, but in order to achieve the College's 2030 net-zero pledge more needs to be done and now. The design must consider the long term future of the building and the community as a whole.

Our student center should be a place that reflects the values of the students and the college. Conn's mission states that we are a leader in safeguarding the environment, but with every project completed that doesn't prioritize sustainability we fail to uphold our values and fall behind our peer institutions.

Sustainability cannot continue to be the first thing sacrificed due to budget constraints. While implementing more efficient and green energy technologies may have more costs up front, lower operating costs will save the college money in the long run. We need to be aggressive with climate action.

We hope that the College learns from its past and takes these concerns and and urges. We want to see the College achieve the 2030 net-zero goal, but that will not be possible unless sustainability is at the forefront of the Cro renovation. One building will not stop climate pledge, but a net-zero Cro would be a symbol that Conn truly is serious in honoring its net-zero pledge. For the sake of all of our futures, we hope to see change.
