Litter Awareness

The Issue

Covid lockdown saw a wave of litter increase across the country in local beauty spots as well as verges, open parks, outside local dwellings and though cities and beaches across Great Britain.

This is to ask for New Laws and Guidelines to be brought in to increase litter awareness and help to bring focus to the forefront on the danger littering brings to both the environment and wildlife through more advertising campaigns across the country.

It is also to ask for companies to step up and take ownership by adding clear litter awareness branding to their packaging and reduce single use plastics.

it’s to ask supermarket chains to seriously rethink about packaging to sellable items and also to clean up outside their stores at the close of every business day.

It would also ask for those selling any food produce to take responsibility for the outside of their place of business to clean up at the close of every business day as part of closing responsibility’s even if the area outside is not their responsibility.

That every household across Great Britain take ownership for the land outside their living dwellings up to the roadside, to get involved in better recycling of their waste and reduce unnecessary plastic purchasing.

It’s to ask for a county ban on any forest fires and disposable BBQs within all open areas - the New Forest took a massive impact during Covid and as we know the ground is peat based with BBQs not being lifted off the floor these left burn marks on the ground and could have quite easily caused a forest fire, I’m sure this has the same impact across the country.

That more litter enforcement is put in place and that more bins are made available at every place of public transport for example bus stops where litter builds up.

That beaches and forests have dedicated inspectors and enforcement officers during holiday seasons regularly patrolling and issuing fines for litter offences.

Its to ask for heavy fines for any form of fly tipping.

Its to ask for additional help and support for any local litter picking groups helping to push back against litter in their area offering funding to purchase good quality kit to help keep them safe and perform the volunteer role safer, helping with litter collection spots and pickups.

It’s to ask for government support in offering schools litter picking education and lessons as part of a young environment study - children love helps Nig to protect nature and wildlife so why not offer every school the funding to support this?

It’s to ask for more toilet facilities to be installed to local areas being advertised as beautiful spots to visit, as seen through the effects of Covid people travelling to open spaces took to using these spaces as a toilet leaving a trail of toilet tissue, wet wipes, nappies and bottles of urine for locals to clean up.

It’s to hold local councils responsible for not just cutting grass and hedges but also cleaning up prior to performing these duties saving broken bottles and sharp split cans being left as an after result causing danger to animals and children.

Its to ask all responsible people to come together drafting up a demarcation of responsibility for areas like verges and litter, ownership for removing waste in lay-bys and ownership for instant removal of cones, road signs and car accident remains.

This may seem a big ask but its only with these efforts put in place we will stand a chance of pushing back against the tide of litter spreading across the country in an effort to reduce our impact on this planet.
