The Issue

THE PETITION:
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that Crown proceed with the Criminal Code charge as an indictable offence and, if found guilty, Lindsey Susan Hirtreiter be sentenced to the maximum allowable, including a lifetime ban on owning, caring for, or being in the company of animals or birds. We also request that, given the fact that there was a four-year-old child living in this household who may have been subjected to witnessing this alleged crime and that there is a link between animal cruelty and violence toward humans, this case be viewed with the utmost importance.

PETITION BACKGROUND
(from "Metro Vancouver" article at the link below):

Police were called to a home in Surrey, British Columbia in the early hours of February 14, 2015, to respond to reports of a woman being attacked by a dog. But when officers arrived, they discovered the attack had been the other way around. A black Labrador retriever named Ryder had accidentally escaped from his owner’s yard a few blocks away. He was found at the scene in medical distress. RCMP said Ryder had been stabbed, beaten and bound by electrical cord.

Veterinarians later found a number of items forced down Ryder's stomach, including lighters and jewelry. Ryder required life-saving veterinary treatment for puncture wounds to his eye and lacerations in the back of his throat. Ryder was subsequently reunited with his family. The suspect was taken into custody under the Mental Health Act and a four-year-old girl at the home was removed by the Ministry of Children and Family Development.
