This petition calls for justice for a husky dog and cat who were found dead in two separate incidents in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The husky was determined to have died of starvation, and had been chronically malnourished. The cat died from "asphyxia due to ligature strangulation following the infliction of multiple traumatic injuries to the head, tail and hind limbs," according to the Calgary Humane Society. Charged with two counts of "wilfully causing unnecessary pain, suffering, or injury to an animal" is 19-year-old Nicolino Ivano Camardi.
Animal cruelty is a crime of violence against animals and a red-flag indicator of the potential for animal abusers to be participating in other criminality, including violence toward humans. It is therefore a public safety concern and must be viewed as such by our criminal justice system.
This petition requests that Crown Counsel proceed with these charges as indictable offences and that, if someone is convicted of animal cruelty in relation to this dog and/or cat’s death, Crown Counsel recommend, and the honourable sentencing judge apply, the maximum sentence available, including a lifetime ban on owning animals in accordance with the relevant legislation.
