Benjamin Stein left several thousand animals to die in his barn near Langton, Ontario, in what may be the largest case of animal cruelty in Canadian history. His sentencing is April 26th, 2018, in Simcoe, Ontario. ***Please join us in requesting that Crown Attorney Elizabeth Wade ask the judge to ban Stein from ever again having animals in his care.***
On February 17th, 2017, the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals entered Stein's barn and found:
●1265 dead pigs;
●250 more pigs in such poor condition that they had to be euthanized immediately;
●air quality so poor that they had to cut vents in the walls for ventilation;
●sections of the barn where the inspectors had to wade waist-high in water, feces, and dead animals;
●and animals so hungry that they were cannibalizing the dead pigs around them.
Stein was charged with:
● causing an animal to be in distress;
●permitting an animal to be in distress;
●failure to provide adequate food and water;
●failure to provide adequate and appropriate sanitary conditions;
●failure to provide adequate and appropriate resting and sleeping areas for the animals in question;
●failure to provide adequate and appropriate ventilation;
●failure to provide adequate and appropriate medical attention;
●and failure to provide adequate and appropriate protection from the elements, including harmful temperatures.
He plea-bargained, and is being allowed to plead guilty to only four of the eight charges:
●allowing animals in his care to live in distress
●failure to provide sanitary conditions for animals in his care
●failure to provide adequate ventilation
●and failure to provide basic veterinary care.
The Crown withdrew the other charges, but there is no suggestion that Stein is innocent of those charges ... he was simply given the lesser charges in exchange for pleading guilty and avoiding a lengthy trial.
In addition to leaving these 1500 pigs and more to die in February of 2017, there was a fire in Stein's barn less than 5 months before, on September 28th, 2016. And at the hearing in January, 2018, Stein's lawyer stated that there had also been a toxic gas leak in the same pig barn and a number of pigs died. The lawyer claimed that this toxic gas leak was what put Stein over the edge, and led to his abandoning his barn full of animals. The fire on September 28th, 2016, was not mentioned in court at all.
It seems clear that this man is not only incapable of taking care of animals, but that he should never be trusted with their lives again.
