Stop Ship to Ship Transfers Of Oil Across The Mouth Of The Cromarty Firth

Cromarty Firth Port Authority (CFPA) are applying for an oil transfer license from the Maritime Coastguard Agency that could put thousands of dolphins, porpoises and whales and other marine life and bird life at risk; we have to stop them.

CFPA are requesting a licence to extend their operations from transfers between vessels tied to the nearby Nigg Oil Terminal to transfers between vessels anchored at the mouth of the Firth. This would allow them to transfer a maximum of 8,640,000 tonnes of oil across an area of the Moray Firth near Inverness, Scotland. The specific area in question is renowned for its spectacular wildlife; home to beautiful bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoises, Minke whales and a wealth of other valuable marine and bird life.

CPFA ‘do not consider’ the risk posed to the environment as serious, but their environmental modelling is questionable. Their spillage risk plan appears to have been based on only one tonne of oil escaping, and they take no account for the fact that the wind can blow up the east for several weeks a year, risking any spillage being blown right up the Firth. This could have a catastrophic impact over a wide area.

In addition to obvious environmental concerns, the views of the affected communities have not been taken into account, and there has been a real lack of meaningful consultation. Given the potential impact that this ship to ship transfer scheme could have on nearby coastal communities, this really is not acceptable.

If oil were to spill, or if anything else were to go wrong, the safety of our iconic dolphin population, not to mention other marine and wildlife, would be put in serious danger. This risk is too great.

Please sign and share this petition asking Cromarty Firth Port Authority to cancel their oil transfer licence application and/or request that the Maritime Coastguard Agency refuse it.
