The Issue

Petland is the only national pet store chain that sells puppies sourced from commercial breeders, aka "puppy mills," where disease is prevalent and breeding dogs endure inconceivable suffering and inhumane living conditions.

Their infected offspring arrive at Petland stores nationwide in varying stages of diseases like parvovirus, campylobacter, and giardia. Petland recites scripted lies to consumers and uses predatory sales and lending tactics to sell these sick puppies with falsified health certificates and sham health warranties for $2000 to $18,000 a piece and finance rates as high as 130%.

Due to high disease rates, nearly half of these puppies do not live beyond 12 weeks of age, and those who do die an early death from congenital diseases resulting from bad breeding practices at the mills. Families, with excitement and love, welcome a new puppy into their homes, only to face heartbreak when their beloved pet falls severely ill or even dies shortly after purchase. The monetary losses to consumers who purchase these sick,  often dying puppies and the veterinary expenses incurred trying to save them amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars, perhaps even millions after so many years of this ongoing deception, and for many, the emotional toll is immeasurable.

Petland's deceitful practices have not only led to emotional and financial devastation,  but has also posed significant health risks to humans.
These sick puppies are vectors for diseases that can transfer to humans, leading to severe public health risks. In fact, there have been at least four multistate human campylobacter outbreaks traced by the CDC to contact with puppies from Petland, with some instances serious enough to require hospitalization. It's an unsettling reality that a store many trust is involved in practices leading to such dangerous outcomes.

Petland' has caused large scale, widespread economic, psychological, and physical harm to consumers and the public at large with impunity for far too long already, and will continue to do so in the future absent proper enforcement of consumer protection and animal welfare laws.

Selling sick animals is not just unethical; it's illegal. We are urging legal action against Petland to halt their fraudulent operations and protect both consumers and defenseless animals. Petland is not above the law. Given the tangible evidence of consumer fraud and animal cruelty, it is imperative that the authorities criminally prosecute Petland for their bad business practices to the fullest extent of the law.

The time to hold Petland accountable is long overdue. By signing this petition, you are advocating for justice and the welfare of countless animals and consumers. Let's send a clear message that exploiting innocents for profit won't be tolerated any longer. Help make a difference by demanding justice and legislative change to prevent further animal cruelty and consumer fraud. Sign our petition today to bring Petland's malpractices to a halt and ensure no more families face such heartache in the future.
