UPDATE: It has been brought to my attention that Marco Mendicino's office knew about Paul Bernardo being transferred to a less secure prison in Quebec as early as March. Yet, the Public Safety Minister failed to notify the victims' families, or do anything to prevent the transfer. 

Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre is demanding that Mendicino resign as a result. I agree, as do many Canadians. This petition has been updated to demand Mendicino's resignation.

ORIGINAL PETITION:

Paul Bernardo, a notorious child rapist and serial killer, has been moved from a maximum security prison to one with significantly less security in a different province.

The decision is being met with public condemnation, as the Canadian prime minister continues to be soft on crime and easy on criminals.

Timothy Danson, the lawyer representing two of the families that had their daughters raped and murdered by Bernardo stated to the media:

“From my perspective, Paul Bernardo committed the most unspeakable crimes imaginable, and for him — for someone this dangerous — to be transferred from maximum security to medium security, and that the victims, the French and the Mahaffy families, have no right to know why… is really offensive. And it’s unfair, it’s unjust, and it’s hurtful to them. But I also equally believe that the general public would feel the same way.”

Danson is right. Canadians are extremely angry at the decision, and want to see Bernardo kept in a maximum security prison, where the risk of escape is low. Bernardo should not be given the chance to hurt another girl.

This petition demands that Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) and the Trudeau government intervene, and keep Bernardo in a maximum security facility for the rest of his life.
