Creative subject (music, art, drama) should be taught as non-examined subjects at KS4
The Issue
In light of the recent Curriculum and Assessment Review (interim report) and the falling status of arts subjects in schools and society, I am proposing the following:
If the government is not going to consider arts subjects (music, art, drama) as part of the EBacc, then why can they not be considered a foundation subject? Pupils should have the opportunity to continue developing and supporting their creativity and emotional wellbeing in the same way as they continue to support their physical wellbeing through compulsory PE at KS4. I am suggesting that all pupils have one lesson of a creative subject per week, non-examined, to support their mental and emotional wellbeing. This would be in addition to any examined courses that the school might be offering.
