Create wildlife corridors to reduce roadkill

The Issue

My number one love in life is animals. I am the proud owner of four wonderful dogs, and my favorite animal is the fox. It breaks my heart to know that far too many of these beautiful creatures are living short lives due to being killed on our roads. Every year, countless animals fall victim to roadkill, which not only affects the ecosystem balance but also diminishes the joy and beauty that wildlife brings to our lives.

Roads crisscross natural habitats, posing a deadly risk to wildlife that attempts to cross them. An estimated one million animals are killed daily on roads in the United States alone, according to the Federal Highway Administration. This issue isn't just confined to the U.S.; it's a global problem that demands immediate attention.

The solution lies in creating wildlife corridors—dedicated pathways that allow animals to safely traverse roads without coming into contact with vehicles. These corridors can be overpasses, underpasses, or even tunnels, specially designed to cater to local species' needs. Studies have shown that these wildlife crossings reduce roadkill by up to 85% in areas where they are implemented.

In Canada, the Banff Wildlife Crossings in Alberta have become a global model of success, proving that with the proper planning and investment, we can coexist with nature without causing harm. We need similar efforts globally to ensure wildlife can thrive alongside human development.

Let's push for the creation of more wildlife corridors by urging local and national governments to include these safe passages in infrastructure planning. It is our responsibility to protect the animals with which we share this planet. Encourage your local representatives to prioritize this critical change.

Join me in taking a stand for wildlife safety. Your signature can help make this change a reality, making roads safer for animals and helping to preserve biodiversity for future generations. Please sign this petition to support the creation of wildlife corridors and make a positive impact on the world we live in.
