Create speed humps in all school zones and playgrounds
The Issue
On March 6,2023, I faced an unimaginable tragedy. My beloved little sister, a vibrant 24-year-old mother, and my nephew, a spirited 4-year-old, lost their lives due to an intoxicated driver on drugs. Although my nephew fought for 4 days he still succumbed to his injuries. This horrific event transpired during school release hours in an area bustling with children and their caretakers. A simple addition, like a speed hump, could have prevented this tragedy by potentially damaging the driver's vehicle before he reached my family, forcing him to slow down and possibly preventing this collision.
This preventable tragedy is a stark reminder of the urgent need for enhanced safety measures around our schools and playgrounds. Areas where our children play and learn should be safe havens, free from the threat of reckless driving. Speed humps are a proven deterrent, compelling drivers to reduce their speed and thus, significantly decreasing the likelihood of accidents.
Statistics reveal that traffic calming measures like speed humps can reduce accidents by as much as 40% in high-risk areas. However, many school zones and playground areas still lack these critical safety features. It is imperative that we prioritize the safety and well-being of our children and community members by installing speed humps in all school zones and near playgrounds. Starting with Boston Ave as this road is a constant issue. The reason for speed bumps is you can do the 25 MPH max and they would not affect vehicles unless going over the speed limit or would effect the emergency services.
We are urging local authorities, city planners, and safety commissions to take immediate action. By implementing speed humps in these vulnerable areas, we can create a safer environment for everyone, especially our children.
Join us in advocating for change. The reason for speed humps instead of cameras is as you know residing in Bridgeport there are many vehicle not properly registered. No one likes to have to fix their vehicle and this will be the most efficient step to reducing these issues in our city.
Sign this petition to demand the installation of speed humps in all school zones and playgrounds, and help prevent future tragedies like the one that took my sister and nephew too soon. Your signature can save lives and honor their memory by ensuring safety for all.
