Create safe walking and biking paths to Bhuchar Elementary
The Issue
As a concerned parent in Missouri City, I am urging local officials to create safe walking and biking paths to Bhuchar Elementary School for our children. My six-year-old daughter, along with my younger children and other kids in our neighborhood, dreams of walking or biking to school, just like many children do across the country; however, this dream is far from reality due to the lack of safe paths. Currently, the street leading to Bhuchar Elementary has a 45 mph speed limit and no sidewalks, posing a grave danger to our children and smaller siblings attempting to walk or bike to school.
The closure of our previous elementary school has forced parents and children to adapt to new routes, which are, unfortunately, perilous without sidewalks or bike paths. Research from the National Center for Safe Routes to School indicates that children who walk or bike to school arrive more alert and ready to learn. Furthermore, creating safe pathways to schools decreases traffic congestion, contributing to a safer environment for the community.
Implementing safe routes for children is a critical investment in their future. We ask that the city officials prioritize funding to install sidewalks and bike paths, reduce speed limits, and implement traffic calming measures. Communities in other cities have successfully collaborated with local governments and organizations to create similar infrastructures, and we can do it too.
Our children deserve to feel secure on their way to and from school. Their safety should be a priority, and this is our chance to be proactive to the needs coming to our community. We need to act now to ensure a safe commute for all our young citizens.
Please join me in calling for the creation of safe walking and biking paths to Bhuchar Elementary School by signing this petition. Together, we can make a difference for our children and our community.
