The Issue

Navigating Pitfield Street, in the heart of London N1 5FT, has become an increasingly hazardous task. I experience this danger firsthand every day, especially when walking with my child to Shoreditch Park Primary School or visiting the Britannia Leisure Centre. The overwhelming flow of cyclists – seemingly a million passing every second – creates a precarious environment, turning a simple crossing into a perilous journey.

My concern isn't just for my child, but for the many families and individuals who cross this street regularly. Just recently, I witnessed a child on a bicycle narrowly escaping a collision while attempting to cross the road. It was a heart-stopping moment that underscored the urgent need for immediate safety measures.

The current construction work in the area has exacerbated the situation, removing any semblance of safe crossing points and increasing the unpredictability for pedestrians. Without clear, designated areas to cross safely, the risk of accidents grows exponentially.

We need immediate action to create temporary, well-marked pedestrian crossings while construction continues. Simple additions like zebra crossings, pedestrian islands, or even a temporary footbridge could save lives. Designing these interim solutions ensures that everyone in the community, from young children to seniors, can traverse the street without fear.

The problem isn't insurmountable, and temporary solutions can be put in place with minimal disruption to the ongoing construction. Collaboration between local councils, transport authorities, and the construction teams is essential to swiftly implement these solutions.

By signing this petition, you are urging the local authorities and construction companies involved to prioritize pedestrian safety. Let's work together to ensure a safe environment for all on Pitfield Street during these challenging times. Your support can make a difference and help prevent potential tragedies. Please sign the petition to advocate for safer crossings and protect our community.
