The Issue

Imagine being a mother with young children, an elderly individual, or a person living with disabilities, with nowhere to sleep safely at night. For many people in Anaheim, this is a harsh reality. Living in their cars can be their only option, but without legal places to park, they remain vulnerable to tickets, vehicle impoundment, and a constant threat of danger. This is more than an inconvenience; it’s a crisis, endangering the lives of some of our most vulnerable populations.

Every night, countless individuals and families are faced with the impossible choice: sleep in fear of being fined or continue driving, with no place to rest. These decisions put unnecessary stress, both mentally and physically, on those who are already struggling. In Anaheim, the cost of housing is out of reach for many, and the current lack of safe parking options only exacerbates their difficulties. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Orange County has one of the highest homelessness rates in the nation, further highlighting a pressing need for action.

What we propose is realistic and achievable: dedicate specific areas within Anaheim to serve as safe overnight parking zones for individuals living in their vehicles. These zones should include basic amenities such as security presence, sanitary facilities, and access to service referrals. Cities like San Diego and Los Angeles have successfully implemented similar programs, demonstrating that providing legal parking spaces can greatly enhance safety and quality of life for individuals with no other housing options.

Anaheim's leaders have the power to change lives dramatically and increase our community's safety and well-being. By establishing these safe and legal parking areas, the city of Anaheim can lead by example, providing dignity and hope to those in need.

We implore our city council and local leaders to act now. Implement safe parking programs in Anaheim, support those who are often overlooked, and make our community a safer and more compassionate place for everyone. Sign this petition and help us advocate for a solution that upholds humanity and dignity for all residents.
