Create New Dedicated Roller Skating Space on Oahu, Hawaii

Create New Dedicated Roller Skating Space on Oahu, Hawaii
The Issue
We represent the Rainbow Rollers, a group of passionate members of the roller skating community on Oahu, Hawaii. We are deeply concerned about our lack of a free designated area to skate. Our vibrant group is currently without an official space to practice and enjoy our beloved activity. This not only hinders our ability to grow as skaters but also limits the potential benefits we can bring to our local community.
Roller skating is more than just an enjoyable pastime; it's an excellent form of exercise that can help improve cardiovascular health and strengthen muscles. According to the American Heart Association, roller skating is equivalent to jogging in terms of health benefits and calorie consumption, reduction of body fat, and leg strength development. Despite these advantages, we are currently left with no choice but to skate on public roads and parking lots which can be unsafe due to traffic, uneven surfaces and insufficient lighting. Additionally, we are constantly being denied access to utilize the free volleyball, basketball and pickleball courts. The lack of available free spaces for the skate community has led to ongoing frustrations brought with a decline in mental and physical health.
Cities around the world have recognized the value of providing free dedicated spaces for roller skaters. For instance, San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park has a popular ‘Skatin’ Place’, New York’s long time 'Central Park Skate Circle' and Venice Beach’s famous 'Skate Plaza' that serves as a hub for their local skating community for years. We believe it's time for Hawaii to follow suit.
We urge city officials on Oahu, HI to allocate funds towards constructing a dedicated Skate Circle for us - the roller skaters. This Skate Circle would not include the availability for rink sports since there are already dedicated rinks for such sports but instead ensure the use for leisure skating activities. This will not only provide us with a safe place where we can practice this healthy activity but will also contribute positively towards building an inclusive community that values all its members interests.
Please join us by signing this petition if you support creating this safe space that caters specifically towards promoting the recreational activity of roller skating within our neighborhoods in Hawaii.
