Create murals in Aliso Niguel High School's bathrooms
The Issue
As an art student of over four years, I have long held a dream of creating a meaningful mural in a place within my community that can inspire and uplift others. Aliso Niguel High School is a place full of potential, but burdened by the negativity that sometimes finds its way onto the walls of our bathrooms. It decreases the morale and mental health of a lot of students here on the campus, who haven't even gone into the bathrooms at all. In my previous art classes, we found a creative solution to the same problem of graffiti by painting bright, inspiring designs under desks marred with offensive language. Remarkably, this act of adding acrylic paintings under the desk changed the behavior and significantly reduced further damage. We can apply this concept once more by adorning our bathroom walls with murals that incorporate our school colors and themes close to our hearts.
Murals have the unique power to transform spaces and improve public health. They show off school spirit with colors, promote creativity, and instill pride in those who create and live alongside them. With the involvement of students, teachers, and the administration, this project can strengthen our unity and enhance student morale, offering us daily reminders of what we stand for. With the help of students, teachers, and parents signing off on this petition, we can help to fight the struggle of these bathrooms causing low morale in students
Many, many students have said around the campus how much they disliked going into those bathrooms, some alumni even telling me that for all four years when they attended, had even refused to go in there. This is due to the common occurrences of the unclean environment and the neglect of the bathrooms as a whole. Students have even reported within the Daily Newsletter, https://thegrowlingwolverine.org/4445/editorial/alisos-bathroom-problem/ that it has been a widespread issue for a long time. This article by Stanford University has shown how its campus was more connected to the outdoors and even had students stop by to admire the work itself. https://news.stanford.edu/stories/2019/08/new-stanford-mural-connects-campus-local-nature-diversity-history
While the bathrooms receiving murals may not fix the problems with sanitisation issues on the campus, it at least helps to connect the students to the school's pride, and can help to even alleviate stress of those on campus. It helps the mental health of students while covering up words on the wall that serve no place in our community. With the involvement of students, teachers, and the administration, this project can strengthen our unity and enhance the overall feeling of the campus, offering us a daily reminder of what we stand for. Anyone interested in painting the bathrooms during a supposed break will receive info if the petition goes through!
