Growing up in Thanet, I have seen firsthand how the lack of opportunities and activities for young people can lead to negative consequences. Many of my peers, at a loss for engaging community activities, are drawn into antisocial behaviours (ASB) and find themselves without a clear path toward the future. These at-risk youths are not only a concern for our community's safety but more importantly, they represent untapped potential that could be used for meaningful contributions to society.

In Thanet, like much of Kent, there is a dire need for increased funding for youth provisions. According to a study by the National Youth Agency, areas that invest in youth programmes are seen to reduce ASB by 22%, provide children and teenagers with life skills, and drastically lower risks of violence against women and girls (VAWG). Currently, the youth services in Thanet are underfunded and overstretched, struggling to meet the needs of our growing youth population.

This calls for action. By increasing funding for youth provisions in Kent, we can make youth facilities like community centres, sports teams, art clubs, and educational workshops more accessible. These opportunities are not just extracurricular activities; they are lifelines that help young people feel part of something bigger than themselves, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose.

With proper funding, we can ensure the establishment and maintenance of essential programs aimed at empowering our youth. Such initiatives would not only benefit the young individuals directly involved but also have a ripple effect across our community by promoting safety, inclusiveness, and harmony.
