While early in my journey, I have been fortunate to experience what the world has to offer through travel. From the awe-inspiring beauty of lush rainforests to the visible damage caused by mass tourism, these early experiences shaped not only my love for the planet, but also my awareness of the responsibility we carry as global citizens.

Despite the clear harm mass tourism inflicts on local communities and fragile ecosystems, it continues to dominate the travel industry, while ecotourism — a sustainable and community-focused alternative — remains underutilised. At the same time, many students long for meaningful travel experiences but are restricted by financial barriers. Similarly, retirees possess invaluable skills, knowledge, and time, yet often lack structured opportunities to contribute meaningfully to society and the environment.

This petition calls for the establishment of Intergen Voyages, an innovative intergenerational sustainable travel and service NGO designed to address all of these challenges at once.

Intergen Voyages will bring students and retirees together to travel with purpose allowing them to work side by side in ecotourism destinations to support conservation efforts, local communities, and sustainable development. What makes this initiative truly unique is its intergenerational model, fostering mentorship, shared learning, and mutual respect between generations. Students gain life-changing education beyond the classroom, while retirees find renewed purpose by sharing their experience and expertise in meaningful ways.

One of the first proposed trips under Intergen Voyages would take place in Costa Rica, a global leader in ecotourism and biodiversity conservation. Participants would stay in and collaborate directly with local eco-lodges, ensuring tourism revenue remains within the community. These partnerships would provide eco-lodges with:

A reliable flow of responsible, long-term visitors
Hands-on support through conservation, education, and community projects
Greater international visibility and economic stability through social media recognition
Protection from the pressures of mass, exploitative tourism
Rather than extracting value from destinations, Intergen Voyages helps strengthen and sustain them.

Around the world, iconic ecosystems, from rainforests to coral reefs, have suffered decades of neglect driven by profit-focused tourism. By prioritising conservation, community engagement, and ethical travel, Intergen Voyages offers a model that replaces exploitation with regeneration.

We urgently need a shift towards conscious travel. Travel that connects people across cultures and generations while actively protecting the places we visit. Intergen Voyages has the potential to become a cornerstone of this movement, embedding sustainability, intergenerational cooperation, and social responsibility into the future of travel.
