Create Housing Assistance Programs for Homeless Individuals in Portland, Maine
The Issue
Hey everyone, I need to share what's been going on with me. I'm currently dealing with homelessness in Portland, Maine, while also managing a chronic illness. I moved here from Bangor because a friend promised to help me get on my feet. She assured me there would be a job and a place to stay, but that all fell apart. Instead, I was left stranded, without my belongings, and more vulnerable than before.
My situation got progressively worse when my friend, who I relied on, threw away my belongings without telling me. My clothes, my computer—everything I needed to survive was suddenly gone. Moreover, we were supposed to get an apartment together, a promise that never materialized, leaving me to handle everything alone. Her betrayal left me in a tougher spot, ghosted and blocked with no explanation. So here I am, battling homelessness and a chronic condition, all because of broken promises.
What happened to me is not just a personal crisis; it highlights a bigger issue plaguing our city—the lack of reliable housing assistance for people who find themselves in desperate situations. Portland needs dedicated programs to help individuals like me, who are caught in the storm of homelessness while also dealing with health issues. It's time for our community to rally and demand changes that provide real support and resources for those who need it most.
We need action now. Let’s push for new initiatives that guarantee housing assistance and support services for the homeless in Portland. No one should experience what I’ve gone through. It's more than urgent—it's necessary. Sign this petition to call on local leaders to create and implement programs that will ensure people in crisis have a safe and stable place to call home. We can make a difference together.
