Create GREEN KOPA from NYSC SAED to help solve hunger in Nigeria
The Issue
"What was your NYSC Entrepreneurial Programme like?" I asked.
"You mean SAED? It was a time for us to chill and escape the stress of camp. I joined the ICT Class, for two reasons: I wanted to boost my computer skills and then there was this industrial fan in that part of the hall which was always hot" Odang responded.
"And you served in Abuja in 2020. So the experience has not changed. I thought it was just my 2015 experience in Kwara." I said.
I had settled for Music during the SAED programme because most of the other classes lacked depth and were unappealing especially with regards to the business development aspect of Entrepreneurship.
At my place of primary assignment, Eruku in Ekiti Local Government of Kwara state, I met Onyeka and Oyomikon, fellow corps members of Entrepreneurial like minds, and together, we brainstormed on business opportunities like yam and cashew exports, which were commodities in abundance in the community.
We later discovered and spent a full day at a newly established large scale farm in the community. Oyomikon and I also visited fellow corps members in the nearby Isapa community where we learnt fish farming during the long school vacation. Sadly, we could not engage in this fully, because of some restrictions imposed on us, as well as the lack of a network of like-minded corps members in other parts of the state and nation.
National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is believed to mark the height of educational development for youths in Nigeria. It is supposed to launch us into a productive life as well as social, cultural and economic integration for the nation. However, despite the sustenance, we keep seeing the rise in unemployment indices in the nation. Standing at almost 40%, we continue to imagine the impact of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurial Development, Programme by NYSC.
Imagine if SAED was structured to propel Corps members to understand business development and employ this to discover and harness business opportunities within their places of primary assignment or local government area.
We often talk about the gold in agriculture but yet to build up the Agribusiness chain, hence the idea for GREEN KOPA.
GREEN KOPA would be a community of corps members who discover the Agribusiness opportunities (products and needs) in their respective locations, and build a value chain across the states to help solve the Hunger problem (SDG 2) in Nigeria.
Therefore, NYSC should direct her Inspectors who engage directly with corps members to establish a defined structure of Agribusiness called the GREEN KOPA.
Only then can there be a direct correlation and solution to ending Hunger and harnessing the Agricultural abundance of our Nation.
