The Issue

In recent years, significant strides have been made to address domestic violence, but there remains a notable gap in protecting male victims of abuse. Despite existing laws like Clare’s Law, which aims to prevent abuse by allowing individuals to inquire about their partner's history of violence, many men still feel marginalized. Although Clare’s Law is technically gender-neutral, its perception as being solely for women may inadvertently discourage men from coming forward and reporting abuse. It’s time to introduce "Anthony’s Law" to specifically support male victims and provide them with the same opportunities and resources to protect themselves from abusive partners.

Men's experiences of abuse are often downplayed or dismissed due to societal stereotypes, exacerbating feelings of shame and fear. This can lead to severe underreporting and prolonged suffering. According to the U.S. National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, one in seven men have experienced severe intimate partner violence in their lifetime. These statistics emphasize the urgency of creating an environment where men feel supported and empowered to report abuse.

Anthony’s Law would serve as a dedicated outlet for men to disclose abuse incidents and seek assistance without the stigma attached. Naming this law after a man will symbolize the inclusive nature of domestic abuse services and encourage more men to break their silence.

Furthermore, Anthony’s Law would mandate law enforcement agencies and social services to actively promote and facilitate access to this new channel for men. Training programs can be implemented to ensure sensitivity towards male abuse cases and the unique challenges they face. Awareness campaigns targeting men can also change public perception and foster a more inclusive dialogue around domestic abuse.

By supporting the introduction of Anthony’s Law, we can take a significant step towards equality in domestic violence prevention and support. Let us work together to create a safer and more supportive environment for all victims of abuse. Sign this petition to make Anthony’s Law a reality and extend equal protection to male abuse victims.
