Eros’s Legacy: Every Life Deserves a Fighting Chance

A tiny meow gave us hope. A little purr reminded us he was still fighting. But hope should never have to compete with an emergency veterinary bill.

On October 10, 2026, Eros came into our family. He was a small kitten with an enormous personality, a love for cuddles, and a future that should have stretched years ahead of him. We never imagined that just weeks later, we would be fighting desperately to keep him alive.

On October 25, Eros became critically ill. He was rushed to emergency veterinary care, where we learned just how serious his condition was. He was battling Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), including neurological complications, alongside devastating medical conditions such as sepsis, renal failure, and a blood clot.

What followed was a heartbreaking battle involving multiple emergency hospitalizations, veterinary specialists, intensive treatments, medications, and around-the-clock care.

There were moments of incredible hope. Eros began responding to treatment. He purred, made biscuits, gave headbutts, and cried out for the people he loved. Every small improvement felt like a victory. We celebrated the things most pet owners take for granted: a little meow, a few steps across the room, and the comfort of having him curled up beside us.

But behind every hopeful moment was the crushing reality of mounting veterinary expenses.

Emergency hospitalization, blood and plasma transfusions, diagnostic testing, lifesaving medications, and continued medical care came with overwhelming costs. We were forced to navigate complicated medical decisions while simultaneously worrying about how to afford the treatments that could save him.

No family should have to experience that.

Despite everything we did, Eros lost his battle with FIP on November 2, 2026.

He had been part of our family for just 23 days.

Twenty-three days was all we were given with a kitten who deserved a lifetime.

We did everything we could to give him that lifetime. We fought alongside him, advocated for him, and loved him through every moment of his illness. But love alone could not save him.

And while we cannot bring Eros back, we can fight to make sure his story helps protect others.

This Is Bigger Than One Kitten

Across Texas, families face devastating choices when their animals experience medical emergencies.

A beloved dog is struck by a vehicle. A cat develops a life-threatening illness. A puppy needs emergency surgery. An otherwise healthy animal suddenly requires hospitalization.

These emergencies do not wait for payday. They do not care whether a family has savings, qualifies for financing, or can raise thousands of dollars overnight.

For many families, their pets are not simply animals. They are companions, family members, sources of comfort, and deeply loved parts of their lives.

Yet when a medical crisis strikes, families are often left scrambling to secure treatment while simultaneously facing fear, grief, and financial uncertainty.

Some turn to crowdfunding. Others apply for loans, max out credit cards, or sacrifice their own financial security. Some face the devastating possibility of surrendering their animals or choosing euthanasia because lifesaving treatment is financially out of reach.

An animal’s chance at survival should not depend solely on how much money their family has or how quickly a social media fundraiser gains attention.

What We Are Asking Texas to Do

We are calling upon the Texas Legislature to establish a statewide Emergency Veterinary Care Assistance Fund to provide financial support for families whose animals require urgent, medically necessary, lifesaving treatment.

This fund should be developed through collaboration among state lawmakers, veterinary professionals, animal welfare organizations, nonprofit partners, and community leaders.

Our goal is to create a program that:

Provides emergency financial assistance for qualifying veterinary hospitalizations, surgeries, critical treatments, and lifesaving medications.
Helps families experiencing financial hardship access urgent veterinary care.
Establishes a rapid application and approval process because medical emergencies cannot wait weeks for assistance.
Allows participating veterinary hospitals to coordinate directly with the fund so treatment can begin as quickly as possible.
Promotes transparent eligibility guidelines, responsible oversight, and equitable access to available resources.
Prioritizes animals facing life-threatening but potentially treatable medical emergencies.
This is not a request for unlimited veterinary coverage or a guarantee that every animal can be saved.

It is a request for a meaningful safety net that gives families more options when a medical emergency threatens the life of an animal they love.

Let Eros’s Story Save Lives

Eros will never grow old. We will never celebrate another birthday with him, watch him grow into his oversized paws, or see the cat he would have become.

His life was heartbreakingly short, but it mattered.

He mattered to us. And we believe his story can matter to countless other families.

We cannot change what happened to Eros, but we can work toward changing what happens to the next animal fighting for its life.

No family should have to beg strangers for financial help while watching their beloved companion struggle to survive.

No animal should lose its chance at treatment simply because its family cannot produce thousands of dollars at a moment’s notice.

And no family should have to wonder whether having more money might have changed the outcome.

Please sign and share this petition urging the Texas Legislature to establish an Emergency Veterinary Care Assistance Fund.

Help us turn grief into meaningful change, compassion into action, and Eros’s short life into a legacy that extends far beyond our family.

For Eros. For every animal still fighting. For every family desperate to bring their baby home.

Every life deserves a fighting chance.
