The Issue

My own son has eloped before, and I've seen the distressing statistics that show many autistic children elope, with more than half of them tragically drowning due to their attraction to water. Not all tracking devices work effectively, especially since many children with autism will remove clothes, shoes, and won't wear bracelets or necklaces. This reality makes them even more vulnerable when they wander.

Children with special needs require immediate and effective attention when they go missing. Current Amber Alerts do not account for the unique patterns of behavior displayed by these children, who may not respond to their names being called and are often non-verbal. Implementing a specialized Amber Alert for special needs children who elope is not just a preventative measure; it can save lives.

A specialized alert system could include detailed profiles of the child's behavior, what attracts them, and any known routes or places they are likely to go. This information would be invaluable for quick and targeted search efforts. Emergency services, the police, and the community would be better equipped to locate and assist these children immediately as time is very important.

Around half of all children with autism are at risk of eloping. Without a system designed specifically for their needs, the dangers they face are unnecessarily magnified. An Amber Alert specifically tailored to these children would provide an immediate and wider-reaching alarm to engage all available resources swiftly.

By signing this petition, you advocate for a system that recognizes the unique challenges faced by families with special needs children, and help ensure no parent has to endure the heartbreak of losing a child to preventable causes. Urge lawmakers to create and implement an Amber Alert system that addresses the needs of these vulnerable children. This is a call to action—sign the petition and make a difference now.
