Create a Wildlife Land Bridge between Schreiber, ON and White Sands Road, Hwy #17
The Issue
This summer has been particularly tragic for the wildlife between Schreiber, On and White Sands Road, Hwy #17. Since June 2026, I have witnessed the remains of five moose, a black bear, and a lynx which lost their lives in collisions with tractor trailers. These are only a fraction of the lives lost. Their deaths not only deeply impact our community's collective heart but also disrupt our local ecosystem. As I have experienced, it is also mentally harmful to humans to witness such tragedies and discourages tourism. People like to stop and see, photograph live, healthy animals. That's partly why they travel north.
Each of these majestic creatures plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of our natural environment. Moose are vital for vegetation management, bears help disperse seeds and nutrients, and the lynx controls rodent populations. Their loss could have long-term adverse effects.
This issue is further compounded by the increased traffic on our highways. As traffic volume grows, the risks to wildlife increase disproportionately, leading to more fatal interactions. Human life will be lost in the future as a result of continued collisions.
Our proposed solution is the construction of a Wildlife Land Bridge between Schreiber, ON and White Sands Road, Hwy #17. This bridge would provide a safe passage for animals, reducing fatal accidents and helping restore ecological balance. Successful implementations of such bridges in places like Banff National Park in Canada serve as shining examples. After building dedicated wildlife crossings, Banff saw a remarkable 80% reduction in wildlife-vehicle collisions.
Constructing a wildlife land bridge not only protects animals but also enhances road safety for humans. With fewer animal crossings, the likelihood of human injury or death from related collisions is also minimized. Furthermore, these bridges can be designed to blend seamlessly with the environment, ensuring visual harmony and maintaining the area's natural beauty.
