The Issue

Every day, strays roam our streets in Michigan, each with their own story. Like the sweet boy I’ve been feeding at the local gas station—he’s been there so long, he knows the area as his home. Unfortunately, with our sanctuary at full capacity, we can’t take him in, no matter how much we’d love to. It’s heartbreaking. We’ve managed to provide him with food and care as best as we can. However, Michigan needs a more strategic approach to ensure the safety and well-being of these animals before winter hits hard.

The gas station manager doesn’t allow plates or bowls to be left around, and despite rumors, this stray doesn’t wander into the parking lot; he sticks to what he knows. These animals deserve more than just makeshift solutions. They need consistent support and a permanent placement solution that only a statewide program for their rehabilitation can provide. Imagine statewide action that connects local shelters, veterinarians, and volunteers to create a safety net for strays like him.

Currently, local shelters often operate at full capacity, making it challenging to provide adequate care for all the strays. With a structured program, we can centralize resources, coordinate efforts, and ensure that all stray animals receive proper medical care and a chance at finding a forever home. This isn’t just about one cat or one town; it’s a call to acknowledge and tackle an issue that affects our entire community.

This program would empower local communities, provide funding for the necessary resources, and offer guidance on humane practices to manage stray populations. It would be a life-changer not only for these animals but for us as a society, showing compassion and responsibility. It’s time we step up and create a comprehensive plan to change these animals’ lives.

Join me in urging Michigan lawmakers to establish a statewide program focused on the rehabilitation and placement of stray animals. Let’s work together to give them the care they deserve and a chance at a better life. Please sign this petition and help us make lasting change.
