As someone who has witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by student athletes, I am compelled to bring attention to an issue that affects countless young athletes across the Philippines. These talented individuals, while representing our schools and nation both locally and internationally, often find themselves burdened with the overwhelming task of catching up on academic work. Unfortunately, this is a challenge they have to face simply because their commitments to sports demand them to be away from classes. I propose a solution to alleviate this burden: a special identification (ID) card for student athletes that acknowledges their unique position.

Currently, student athletes are expected to balance both academic and athletic responsibilities. While it is commendable, it is also unsustainable without proper support. The Department of Education (DepEd) should recognize the high-level responsibilities these athletes carry and provide measures to ease their academic pressures. By issuing a special ID for student athletes, schools can be mandated to provide appropriate academic accommodations.

This ID would serve as a formal recognition of a student’s commitment to sports and would allow for reasonable accommodations such as adjusted deadlines for assignments and extended examination periods. Schools and teachers would be informed of the student's competitive schedule, ensuring that academic requirements do not unfairly penalize these students for representing our country.

Statistics reveal that students engaged in competitive sports often experience higher stress and anxiety levels due to the demands placed on them from both school and athletics (Source: National Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA). The implementation of this special ID could significantly reduce this stress, allowing student athletes to focus on excelling in both fields without fear of academic penalties.
