Create a right and expectation to repair

Create a right and expectation to repair
The issue
Growing up, I have always been conscious of the waste we produce. My personal journey towards a more sustainable lifestyle has led me to realize the immense potential in repairing our products rather than throwing them away. It is disheartening to see products being discarded not because they are beyond repair, but because repair options are either unavailable or prohibitively expensive.
We are living in an age where technology defines our lives, yet, when these technologies fail, we are often left with no choice but to send them to landfills. This not only contributes to the growing problem of electronic waste but compromises the quality and safety of our environment. We need to stop this needless consumption by assuring quality while reducing waste.
I am calling on lawmakers and leaders within the technology and consumer goods industries to create a Right and Expectation to Repair. This initiative is aimed at requiring companies to offer comprehensive and accessible repair options for their products. Moreover, it should eliminate any privatized barriers that delay or prevent these repairs from taking place, ensuring that all resolutions are decisive and of high quality within a reasonable timeframe.
Statistics show that 500 million tons of waste are contributed annually from electronic goods alone (source: World Economic Forum), and our current system only exacerbates this issue. Many manufacturers have monopolized the repair processes, leaving consumers with little to no choices or exorbitant costs that make repair impractical.
By affording consumers the right to repair, we empower them with the choice to extend the life of their appliances, reduce waste, and contribute meaningfully towards a sustainable future. We all deserve to live in a world where we can productively manage our consumption and ensure that quality and safety are not compromised.
Sign this petition to urge our leaders to enact the right to repair and lead us into an era of sustainable and conscious consumption. Together, we can make a significant impact on our planet and our future. Please join me in this movement to create a more productive and less wasteful world.
