The Issue

Petition to Mayor Helena Moreno, the New Orleans City Council, and Essence Festival Leadership

New Orleans is not a backdrop.

It is the birthplace of jazz and one of the world's greatest music cities—a cultural heartbeat that has helped make the Essence Festival an internationally celebrated event for more than three decades.

As the City of New Orleans considers the future of its partnership with the Essence Festival, now is the time to make one lasting investment in the culture that defines our city.

We respectfully ask the City of New Orleans and Essence Festival leadership to establish a permanent, dedicated Local Legends Stage as part of future festival agreements.

This is not just another stage—it is an institution.

We are not talking about background music.

We are talking about showcasing New Orleans' top-tier local artists—the musicians who carry forward the legacies of Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson, Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, Dr. John, The Meters, Leo Nocentelli, Irma Thomas, The Neville Brothers, and countless others every single day.

Just as importantly, this stage would recognize today's top-tier torchbearers—the artists who continue to preserve, perform, and advance New Orleans' extraordinary musical legacy for future generations.

New Orleans possesses the artistry, the talent, the discipline, and the cultural depth to make this one of the festival's signature stages.

This is not a new concept.

For many years, the Essence Festival intentionally highlighted New Orleans musicians, artists, culture bearers, chefs, entrepreneurs, and creative professionals as an integral part of the festival experience. A permanent Local Legends Stage would build upon that tradition while strengthening the festival's authentic connection to the city that makes it unlike any other.

While Essence benefits from nationally recognized performers, the festival would be even stronger by intentionally elevating the local torchbearers who sustain New Orleans' musical heritage year-round.

There is no other city in America—or the world—like New Orleans. Millions of visitors travel here because of our music, our culture, our cuisine, our creativity, and our people.

New Orleans doesn’t just listen to music; we participate in it. We second line differently—it’s an inherited rhythm, a community heartbeat that you can't find anywhere else. The Cultural Icons Stage will be the epicenter of that energy, a place that honors the lineage of those who taught us how to move. This isn't just a performance space; it’s a living tribute to the spirit of the streets that keeps our culture alive.

New Orleans is more than a destination—it is a living culture unlike any other. Let's bring back the heart, the soul, and the cultural heartbeat of New Orleans through a permanent Local Legends Stage, ensuring that this extraordinary legacy continues to inspire generations to come.

New Orleans is not simply where the festival is held. New Orleans is the reason the festival has a cultural identity.

This proposal is not about replacing national artists.

It is about ensuring that the musicians who built—and continue to build—New Orleans' musical legacy have a permanent home within one of the city's most celebrated festivals.

Over the years, many members of the New Orleans community have felt that the festival's connection to the city's local musical identity has diminished. By creating a permanent Local Legends Stage, Essence Festival has an opportunity to restore and strengthen that connection—bringing renewed pride to New Orleans while honoring the artists who built its extraordinary musical legacy and those who continue to carry it forward.

A Local Legends Stage would not simply add another performance venue. It would help reconnect the festival to the heart and soul of New Orleans' living music culture, ensuring that future generations experience the authenticity, artistry, and cultural excellence that have made this city unlike any other in the world.

A permanent Local Legends Stage would:

• Preserve history.

• Elevate the standard.

• Celebrate New Orleans' living musical heritage.

• Showcase the city's top-tier local artists before national and international audiences.

• Strengthen the festival's authentic connection to New Orleans.

• Create additional opportunities for local musicians and creative professionals.

• Honor the city whose culture has helped make the Essence Festival a global destination.

As contract negotiations continue, we believe this is the right moment to invest in a lasting legacy that benefits the City of New Orleans, the Essence Festival, local artists, residents, and visitors alike.

We respectfully ask Mayor Helena Moreno, the New Orleans City Council, and Essence Festival leadership to make a permanent Local Legends Stage part of every future Essence Festival held in New Orleans.

New Orleans has given so much to the world of music. It is time we give the artists who built—and continue to build—our musical legacy the stage they have earned.

If you believe New Orleans' artists, music, and cultural legacy deserve permanent representation at one of the city's most important festivals, please sign this petition and share it with others.

Together, we can ensure that the city which gave birth to this extraordinary musical legacy is permanently represented at one of its most celebrated festivals.

Let's ensure that the heartbeat of New Orleans resonates through the Essence Festival for generations to come.
