Create a Pathway to Citizenship for DACA Recipients
The Issue
Growing up, my life in the United States was filled with dreams and aspirations. For many like me, who arrived in the U.S. as children, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program offered a glimmer of hope—a temporary reprieve from the fear of deportation and a step towards a better future. Yet, despite our love for a country we call home, the lack of a clear path to citizenship leaves DACA recipients in perpetual limbo, filled with uncertainty and fear.
Today, hundreds of thousands of DACA recipients live in the United States. We are students, workers, entrepreneurs, and servicemen and women in the military. Data from the Center for American Progress indicates that DACA recipients contribute approximately $42 billion annually to the U.S. GDP and over $5.7 billion in federal taxes. We are an integral part of the socio-economic fabric of this great nation.
But the risk of deportation looms over our heads. We live each day not knowing if the program will be dismantled with a stroke of a pen. Friends and families live in fear, unable to secure a stable life. Our potential and our dreams for the future hang in balance against political tides that can shift overnight.
Our goal is clear: we call upon legislators to create a fair and comprehensive pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients. It's time to move beyond temporary measures and take decisive action to secure the futures of those who have grown up as Americans in every sense but paper.
The proposed pathway should include: comprehensive background checks, proof of educational attainment or employment, and a demonstrated commitment to the values and laws of the United States. With bipartisan support, this pathway can ensure that DACA recipients are not forced to live in uncertainty and that the contributions we make to society continue to flourish.
A permanent solution is not only a moral imperative but also a beneficial policy for the economy and society at large. We urge Congress to act swiftly and decisively to pass legislation that allows DACA recipients to become permanent residents and eventually, U.S. citizens.
