The test specification for face masks has not changed since the introduction in 1972, 48 years ago. They are no longer fit for purpose and need to be superseded by a specification specifically against viruses which are a lot smaller than the current testing which is set at 300 nanometres. These dimensions only offer protection against inert dust particulates. FFP1/2/3 and also the American N95/100 are obsolete.

We need updated and new test criteria to protect mankind and the future generations against this virus and the next viral threats waiting to pounce.

The test criteria in 1972 was down to 300 nanometres which back then, was fit for purpose. Viruses harmful to humans can be as small as 25 nanometres, such as the Zika virus. COVID-19 is anywhere between 80-120 nanometres in diameter. Trying to protect the wearer from a virus wearing the current standard facemask is like trying to catch a golf ball using a football / soccer net. 

Separate test criteria for bacterium and viral protection must be introduced to take into account 21st century threats.
