The Right to a Narrative Reset

We accept that not every season of a television series will be equally successful. We also believe writers and filmmakers must remain free to experiment, surprise audiences and make unpopular creative decisions.

But a continuing series is different from a finished work. When a new season substantially breaks the character logic, internal rules, continuity or narrative foundations that made audiences invest in the story, the next season should not automatically have to build permanently on that branch.

We are asking major studios and streaming platforms to establish a Narrative Reconsideration process: a formal way to review substantial, reasoned audience concerns about a continuing series. A Narrative Reset would be one possible creative outcome of that process — never an automatic result.

When a substantial and verifiable audience raises a reasoned concern, the platform should have a formal way to receive that evidence before the next continuation is creatively locked.

This would not give fans the power to rewrite television, veto difficult stories or demand that creators obey majority opinion.

The creative decision must remain with the filmmakers.

A reconsideration could result in no change at all. Or creators might voluntarily choose to reframe part of a season, acknowledge an unreliable account, alter the continuation, restore deleted material, create an alternative cut, partially retcon events — or, in an exceptional case, remake material.

The central principle is simple:

Publication should not make every narrative decision irreversible.

Games are patched. Books receive revised editions. Films receive director’s cuts. Digital culture already accepts that a published work can sometimes be reconsidered.

Television should at least have a mechanism through which committed viewers can say:

“We have not abandoned this story. We care enough about it to ask you to reconsider the direction before building the future on it.”

We ask major streamers and studios to pilot a transparent Narrative Reconsideration process that protects creative independence, rejects harassment and review-bombing, considers evidence rather than outrage, and publishes a response when a qualifying campaign is formally reviewed.
