Reflections on the Louisa Lawson Memorial Festival

This is the start of reflecting on my visit to Waverley Cemetery which formed part of preparations for the Louisa Lawson Memorial Festival 2027, a community initiative being developed to celebrate the life and legacy of Louisa Lawson (1848-1920), publisher, suffragist, social reformer and founder of The Dawn, Australia's leading women's newspaper of its time. The festival will also recognise the shared contribution of Louisa and her son, Henry Lawson, to Australia's literary and social history. 

The proposed festival will include visits to a number of significant Lawson-related heritage sites across Sydney, including Henry Lawson's grave at Waverley Cemetery, Henry Lawson Cave at Flat Rock Gully, the Henry Lawson statue in the Royal Botanic Gardens, and the site where a memorial to Louisa Lawson was approved but never constructed. The aim is to increase public awareness of the Lawson family's contribution to Australian history while encouraging community participation, cultural engagement and heritage tourism.

As I anticipate visitors travelling from across Australia, and potentially overseas, the ability to easily access important heritage destinations via public transport will be an important part of the visitor experience. My recent journey highlighted the value of ensuring that transport staff and passengers can readily identify major cultural and historical landmarks such as Waverley Cemetery.
