I have witnessed firsthand the appalling conditions in which chickens are kept at some of our country's large-scale poultry farms. The sights were shocking: overcrowded coops reeking of ammonia, chickens living in filth, and many suffering from preventable diseases due to these horrendous conditions. It is heartbreaking to know that these creatures, who eventually end up on our plates, are subjected to such inhumane treatment. This personal experience has compelled me to take a stand and advocate for change.

Currently, there is a glaring lack of legislation protecting poultry under humane slaughter standards. While other livestock receives certain welfare protections, poultry—being the most consumed meat—falls through the gaps. The absence of a Humane Slaughter Act for poultry allows practices that would be unacceptable for other animals. This double standard is not only unethical but also impacts the quality of the food we consume.

Research indicates that poor welfare conditions lead to health issues in poultry, such as skeletal deformities, respiratory issues, and heart problems, due to unnaturally fast growth rates and stressful living conditions. This results in higher mortality rates and significant numbers of birds being culled due to illness, further exacerbating the ethical concerns and economic inefficiencies.

Stricter regulations should be enforced to ensure that chickens are given adequate space, clean environments, and proper care to prevent disease and injury. Implementing such laws would not only improve the welfare of these animals but would also contribute to more sustainable and ethical farming practices, ultimately benefiting consumers, producers, and the environment.
