Canadians living with neuromuscular disorders (NMDs) are being left behind.

Around the world, life-changing treatments for neuromuscular conditions are being approved and used, improving quality of life and, in some cases, saving lives. Yet in Canada, people with NMDs often face years-long delays to access these therapies or never gain access at all.  Families are forced to wait without answers while breakthroughs reach patients elsewhere.

Canada already has mechanisms to accelerate drug approvals when medical need is urgent. However, there is no approval pathway designed specifically for neuromuscular disorders, despite the complexity, rarity, and progressive nature of these conditions.

Muscular Dystrophy Canada is calling on the federal and provincial governments to create a made-for-purpose fast-track approval pathway for neuromuscular treatments, one that reflects the urgency, complexity, and unmet needs of the neuromuscular community.

The needs of people living with neuromuscular disorders are urgent and undeniable.  A specialized fast-track system would help ensure that Canadians affected by NMDs can access critical therapies sooner, treatments that can slow or maintain disease progression, improve independence, and save lives.

Canadians with neuromuscular disorders are watching treatments change lives for others while they continue to wait here at home. This delay is not inevitable, it is a policy failure, and it must change.

A dedicated fast-track approval pathway would give people living with NMDs timely access to innovative drugs and therapies, offer hope to families, and help build a future with fewer barriers and greater possibilities.
