The Issue
In the heart of San Pablo, many residents of mobile homes are facing a dire situation. These are not just buildings on rented lots, but homes where our seniors live on fixed incomes and working families strive to make ends meet. For these community members, their mobile homes represent not only shelter but a sanctuary of stability amidst life's challenges. Yet, this sense of stability is constantly threatened by the unpredictable and often unjust increases in rent.
The urgent need for a fair Mobile Home Rent Stabilization Ordinance in San Pablo cannot be overstated. Such an ordinance would protect our vulnerable neighbors from sudden and exorbitant rent hikes, ensuring they can continue to live in peace without the looming fear of displacement. It would regulate rent increases, keeping them reasonable and predictable, thus fostering a secure environment for those who have already settled in their chosen homes.
Statistics show that more than 20% of San Pablo’s population consists of individuals aged 65 and over, many of whom reside in mobile homes due to the affordability it traditionally offers. However, without protective measures, these residents are at risk of losing their homes due to rent inflation that outpaces Social Security and pension income increases. Meanwhile, working families, who are integral to our community’s economic fabric, find themselves squeezed by rising costs, threatening their ability to provide stable homes for their children.
The City of San Pablo has an opportunity to lead by example by instituting this vital ordinance. Other Californian cities like Glendale and Hayward have already enacted similar protections, demonstrating the positive impact these policies can have. A carefully crafted ordinance could be the shield our residents need to stay in their homes and maintain the health and cohesiveness of our community.
Let us come together to urge our city leaders to take immediate action. We ask them to prioritize the well-being of our seniors and working families by implementing a fair Mobile Home Rent Stabilization Ordinance. This ordinance should provide a cap on annual rent increases, tie any adjustments to the Consumer Price Index, and establish an oversight body to ensure fair practices and dispute resolution.
Please add your signature to this petition to promise a fair chance for every resident in San Pablo to call their mobile home a true home. Stand with us and make a difference in the lives of many deserving families and individuals.
