The Issue

Greenville, South Carolina, is renowned as one of the nation’s most dog-friendly cities. However, residents in the North Main area face challenges in providing adequate off-leash exercise for their dogs. While downtown Greenville offers numerous walking trails, many dogs require off-leash spaces to meet their exercise needs. In urban settings, limited backyard space further exacerbates this issue. Currently, the nearest dog parks, such as the Conestee Dog Park, are approximately 20 minutes away from North Main, making daily visits impractical for many residents. Given the area’s significant dog-owning population, a more conveniently located dog park would greatly benefit both residents and their pets. Establishing a local dog park would not only serve pet owners but also enhance the community at large. Studies indicate that proximity to well-maintained dog parks can increase property values by up to 15%, as they are attractive to potential buyers. We urge the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department to consider developing a dog park accessible to North Main and downtown residents. Such an amenity would promote responsible pet ownership, foster community engagement, and contribute to the overall appeal of our neighborhood. Please support our initiative by signing the petition to create a dedicated dog park for downtown Greenville's four legged family members.
