Create a Dog Park at the Former Davis Elementary Site

Create a Dog Park at the Former Davis Elementary Site
The Issue
While scanning Google Maps, you will notice there isn't designated dog park available in the south central Plano region. Your furry friends deserve a dedicated space to play, socialize, and exercise safely. By repurposing the Davis Elementary School site into a dog park, not only do we provide a necessary service to pet owners, but we also ensure that the land continues to serve a community purpose.
As a licensed civil structural engineer in the State of Texas and local resident of Plano, I have a unique perspective on how the space previously occupied by Davis Elementary School could be transformed into a vibrant centerpiece for our community. The structural remnants of the school, including its building foundation elements, can be beautifully repurposed to support innovative features like tension fabric canopies, which will offer essential shade to the new area. Additionally, the existing utilities, such as water lines, could be easily adapted to provide water fountains for both dogs and their owners. Much of the original parking could even accommodate visitors to the dog park, ensuring a seamless integration with the existing infrastructure.
The strategic location of this planned dog park can bridge to the existing Caddo Park via the pedestrian bridge, fostering a sense of unity and continuity rather than a patchy, disconnected amenity. This new dog park will not be just another facility; it will complement the existing park, adding value to the entire area.
This proposal is not just about creating a dog park but about fostering community spirit and well-being. By utilizing existing infrastructure, the transformation can be both cost-effective and environmentally friendly, a sustainable solution for an immediate community need.
I urge the City Council of Plano and the community to support this initiative, which not only addresses the needs of our beloved pets but also utilizes resources wisely and sustainably. Please join me in advocating for a dog park at the former Davis Elementary site to enhance the quality of life for all residents and their pets in the area. Sign this petition to make south-central Plano a welcoming, pet-friendly neighborhood.
