Create a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine Program in San Antonio

Create a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine Program in San Antonio
The Issue
Living in San Antonio has always been a blessing—it's home to my family, friends, and a vibrant community that offers so much. However, my dream of becoming a veterinarian is threatened by the lack of a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine program in the area. I, like many others, would face the daunting task of uprooting my life, leaving my support system behind, and undergoing significant financial strain just to attend vet school far from home.
San Antonio, with its rich agricultural and medical community, is ripe for hosting a veterinary medicine program. The city is the seventh-largest in the United States and has a robust scientific and medical sector, making it an ideal location for such an academic addition.
According to a 2021 report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for veterinarians is projected to grow 17% from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations. Yet, Texas itself has only a few veterinary schools. By establishing a local program, we can address the growing demand, create more opportunities for aspiring veterinarians, and contribute to animal welfare in our community.
A veterinary medicine program would enrich our local economy by creating jobs, promoting research and innovation, and attracting both students and faculty. Moreover, students will be able to engage in hands-on learning with San Antonio's diverse animal populations, from ranch animals to urban pets.
Local universities and educational stakeholders must consider this immense opportunity. By signing and supporting this petition, you can help make the dream of a local Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine program a reality, benefitting countless students and enhancing the veterinary field in San Antonio. Please sign this petition to spur change and advocate for more accessible veterinary education in our community.
