Create a Charlie Kirk Civics Department at UVU

Create a Charlie Kirk Civics Department at UVU
The Issue
As the grandson of the founder of Utah Valley University (UVU), I deeply feel the weight of the significant tragedy that took place on our campus — the untimely assassination of Charlie Kirk. This event not only shook our community but also highlighted the need for reinforced academic and societal engagement within the university. Charlie Kirk was more than just a speaker; his vision and free expression of his faith and principles inspired millions, drawing over 3000 attendees to this event alone, who were eager to engage with his ideas. UVU, as a place of education and enlightenment, owes Charlie an unpayable debt and can honor his legacy by fostering environments that prevent such tragedies in the future by promoting civics, allowing for students to be engaged in civil discourse where they learn how to respect those who's ideas may differ from their own.
Therefore, I propose the creation of a new department at UVU dedicated to the study of civil discourse and civics, complemented by a degree program in this critical field. This initiative will not only pave the way for a more informed student body but also ensure that all students receive a well-rounded education by integrating a mandatory general education class in Civics. Our nation faces challenges that can be mitigated through informed and engaged citizens; thus, understanding civic responsibility is paramount.
To accommodate this new department and its objectives, I suggest the development of a new building, aptly named the Charlie Kirk Civics Building. This facility would symbolize our commitment to the values Charlie Kirk embodied and ensure his legacy endures at UVU. The building could be funded by third-party sponsors who share our vision for a brighter, better-informed future.
By implementing these changes, UVU would not only honor Charlie Kirk’s memory but also lead the way in academic excellence and societal contribution. I urge the stakeholders, including the administration, alumni, and potential benefactors of UVU, to take this bold and necessary step for our community and future generations.
I invite everyone who believes in the power and necessity of civics education to sign this petition. Together, we can ensure that UVU remains a beacon of progress and understanding.
