The Issue

On May 8th, a New York Times article was released describing multiple harassment and sexual harassment allegations against Craig Steinley, the current Vice President of the Appraisal Institute.

The continuation of Craig Steinley in his position on the Appraisal Institute’s Executive Committee is detrimental to our organization. We cannot stand by as members are continuously burdened with the reputational and financial costs that would be avoided if better leadership were in place.

The Appraisal Institute is a prestigious organization tasked with upholding the integrity and standards of the appraisal profession. To do this effectively, we need leaders who are accountable, transparent, and aligned with the interests of all members. Unfortunately, Mr. Steinley’s alleged actions conflict with these principles, resulting in legal troubles, financial penalties, and reputational damage to the organization. We must question why these issues persist and seek leadership that can avoid them.

Replacing Mr. Steinley is critical for restoring trust of our members and the public and ensuring that our focus as an organization remains on supporting the appraisal profession and our members. We deserve leaders who prioritize the sustainability and growth of our Institute, free from legal actions and unnecessary expenditures.

Join me in urging the board of directors to take immediate action to remove Craig Steinley from his position and in preventing his future return, and thereby protect the financial interests and integrity of the Appraisal Institute.
