The U.S. spends more per person on healthcare than any nation, yet we are one of only eight countries where maternal deaths are rising. Our maternal mortality rates have more than doubled in the last 25 years. Today, women are more likely to die from pregnancy and childbirth-related complications in the U.S. than in Iran, Serbia, and Bosnia.
My name is Jennie Joseph. I am a British trained midwife who believes in patient-centered care where women are respected, educated, supported, and empowered to take charge of their own health. I practice in Central Florida where I run a maternity center and prenatal clinic that has vastly improved birth outcomes for at-risk mothers and babies.
Black women are 3-4 times and Hispanic women are 50% more likely to die during birth than white women.
In response to high prematurity, low birth-weight, high mortality and near-death rates experienced by low-income, uninsured and women of color, I established an Easy Access outreach clinic. I want to ensure that all women can receive essential prenatal care provided by midwives and doulas. We utilize an innovative maternal child healthcare system that is low-cost, evidence-based and replicable anywhere. No woman is ever turned away regardless of her ability to pay.
Women who are at risk for poor birth outcomes benefit tremendously from the support of a doula, yet they have the least access to doula services.
Data shows that midwives and doulas can improve medical outcomes, control costs, and reduce health disparities. Midwives provide clinical care for women throughout their childbearing experience. Doulas are trained professionals who provide physical, emotional, and educational support to mothers before, during, and immediately following childbirth.
Communities, providers, and hospitals need to be educated about the role and benefits of midwifery and doula care.
That is why I am calling on insurance companies and state Medicaid programs to fully reimburse for midwifery and doula care in all 50 states, and provide resources for policyholders to educate women and families on their options.
This is the first step we need to take to give women access to the care they need.
Until women and their loved ones feel informed, empowered and supported enough knowledge and agency to take part in their own healthcare decisions, they will continue to be at risk.
