On June 2nd, 2020, peaceful protesters made their way towards Merrick Road when they were blocked by Police and accosted by vulgar and belligerent members of the community, espousing racist views. While these members of the community (who were visibly predominately white) were within their right to propagate such filth, the protesters were well within their rights to march down the road and demonstrate peacefully. Our Constitution's 1st Amendment guarantees them that right. Yet, the eyes of the entire nation witnessed as Merrick Police attempted to suppress that right. Merrick, Nassau County, and Long Island as a whole, should be ashamed of themselves for allowing the rights of their residents to be trampled on. With this petition we, and others like us, demand that Nassau County Executive Laura Curran denounce the actions of Police in their quest to suppress peaceful protestors. Additionally, we demand that Nassau County Executive Laura Curran denounce the kind of fervent racism so prevalent and deeply rooted within Merrick and the rest of the towns that fall under her jurisdiction. The People Have Had Enough.
