“OWNER RECLAIMS” IN IRISH POUNDS

There are 31 Dog Pounds in Ireland.

If a dog is roaming and chases farm animals or is even SUSPECTED of hurting something - animal or human - they will be listed as “Owner Reclaim Only”.  If the owner doesn't reclaim, the dog is euthanised.

Dogs are sentient animals - which means, they are aware of their feelings and emotions - they feel negative feelings such as pain, frustration and fear, as well as feelings of comfort, enjoyment, contentment, joy, and happiness.  No dog that has been abused, neglected, or abandoned will escape having emotional issues as a result of that mistreatment.  It does not mean they are “bad” dogs, just dogs that need more understanding and training than others.

Do you think those pounds should put that animal down after 5 days with no alternatives, such as, releasing the dog to a Rescue for assessment, rehabilitation, & rehoming?  Impound facilities are not equipped to deal with dogs that require rehabilitation.  No pounds or vets in Ireland are dog rehabilitators; whereas, Rescues do this all the time.  All dogs deserve a chance to live and an opportunity to be placed in a responsible situation in Rescue where people work everyday at rehabilitation.

Often what happens is that an irresponsible owner will have let the dog roam and they will be dogs and possibly cause injury or death to another animal.

A responsible owner will pay the council fees and any compensation needed on collection of their dog.

A responsible owner will attend the pound, save their dogs life, and take responsibility for their dogs actions.

Sadly, some owners aren’t responsible and won't - which leaves nobody taking responsibility for the dog or any damages caused - and the dog is then euthanised.

The price of the lethal dose of euthanasia could be dramatically reduced if the dog, and all responsibility for that dog, was signed over to a Rescue.  The Council should be happy as they will have reduced their operating costs, and, more importantly, one less dog will have died in Irish pounds.

Please write to your local county council and demand that this be changed with immediate effect.

Most Impounding Facilities in Ireland have reference numbers like Carrick Dog Shelter and they publish “Owner Reclaims” on their Facebook page.  Sadly not all pounds have either reference numbers or Facebook pages and not all owners know where their dogs will have ended up if they have been lost or stolen.

Many, many dogs are reunited through Facebook with the power of social media.

Please support a change to allow dogs that are “owner reclaim only” to be released to Rescues only so that they are spared being surrendered by owners and euthanised or not reclaimed.

Please support a Council policy change to allow dogs deemed unsuitable for homing, surrendered dogs, and seized dogs to be released to Rescue.

Save a life in your local pound.  E-mail your local pounds and County Councils and ask them to change their policy with immediate effect.

Who is willing to Protest the County Councils and pounds until we save those dogs that are “owner reclaim” or deemed dangerous?

Please contact me if you are prepared to protest Individual County Council offices and Pounds regularly.

To help this puppy today
Email dogs@monaghancoco.ie and ask that this dog be released to rescue if no owner comes forward and if owner comes forward and surrenders that the dog be released to rescue rather than euthanise a PUPPY
