A recent inspection of the Dam at Piney Run Lake from the Maryland Department of Environment reported the Dam as being in good condition, but there are issues with the spillway and erosion concerns. Carroll County must make the Dam compliant, fixing the spillway by 2027, or the state will make repairs and fine the county. 

There were two options presented to fix the spillway:

• ALT 1 - Fix for compliance; less expensive and does not require draining the lake. A cofferdam would be used to minimize the impact to the lake, park, and wildlife. 
• ALT 2 - Drain the lake, bulldoze the sediment, and reconfigure the park; much more expensive and major impact to the parks resources. ALT 2 fixes the spillway, but also turns Piney Run Lake into a water source for the county with plans to build a water treatment facility on the property. 

The Carroll County Board of Commissioners will be meeting on 03/25/2021 with an upcoming decision. Early communication suggests they are in favor of ALT2. 

Many in the Carroll County community are against ALT 2 due to its significant impact on the lakes ecosystem and losing access to the outdoor resource. Please take time to sign this petition to show you are in favor of ALT 1 and opposed to ALT 2. You do not want Piney Run Lake drained, or a Water Treatment facility built on Piney Run's grounds.
