Abolishing the police is a very controversial issue right now, but I believe it is necessary to have a safer and better America. The police were first created as slave patrols and haven't been committed as an institution to protect African Americans since. Washtenaw County government and officials need to abolish the police and instead put in place a new public safety system such as the one Minneapolis, Minnesota plans to create.

Not only has the Police, as an institution, never protected African Americans' rights, they are doing the complete opposite of their purpose. Their purpose is to maintain public order and safety, but police are shown in videos, such as the police brutality of Sha'Teina Grady El, doing the exact opposite. The police weren't originally created to protect us and never will. Defunding the police and other small reforms are not going to erase the racism that has already infected the police force. A new system is necessary to dismantle the racism that persists in this county and nationwide.
