The Issue

I am one of the 88% of UK citizens deeply concerned about the devastation of our wildlife, which has declined by 60% and is continuously diminishing. One day, in the not too distant future, I want to be able to look my grandson in the eye when we discuss the fate of our many amazing UK wild species. I want to know I did something to change our path.

In recent years, the decline of wildlife in the UK has reached alarming levels, with many species facing extinction due to habitat loss and environmental changes. Meanwhile, many local councils conduct frequent maintenance of green spaces, unaware that such practices might exacerbate this crisis. Frequent grass cutting disrupts habitats, reduces biodiversity, and diminishes the natural beauty of these areas.

The Orkney Islands Council has set a commendable precedent by deciding to cut grass in green spaces just once a year, at the end of summer. This move is a straightforward yet powerful action to save costs, boost biodiversity, and cherish the green spaces that are indispensable to our environment and well-being. Why not adopt this thoughtful approach across all UK local councils?

If all local councils in the UK were to follow Orkney’s example, the positive impact on biodiversity would be profound. It is a sensible move that would allow native plants to flourish, provide essential habitats for insects and other wildlife, and simultaneously reduce council costs related to mowing. Wildflowers would have the chance to bloom, creating vibrant, natural landscapes that benefit both wildlife and citizens alike.

This approach doesn’t require cutting-edge technology or huge investments—it is simply about giving nature the time it needs to recover and thrive. We are at a critical crossroads, and we must act decisively to restore and protect our precious natural heritage before it's too late.

Join me in urging every local council in the UK to implement a policy of annual grass cutting. Your signature can make a world of difference in preserving our wildlife and enriching the green spaces we all cherish. Please sign this petition to call for action today.
